2 ‘guest' performers highlight APSU Homecoming concert

Austin Peay State University's 2006 Homecoming kicks off in grand style with the American Patriotic Flagship Concert slated for 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 2 in the Music/Mass Communication Concert Hall, one of the top 10 concert halls in the nation, according to The Robb Report Home Entertainment Magazine (March/April 2006).
Gail Robinson-Oturu, chair of the APSU Department of Music, says the stellar concert will be the first of its type at APSU.
With an array of American and patriotic music, the uplifting concert will feature outstanding faculty and student performers, including Robinson-Oturu and tenor Thomas King, both of whom have performed internationally.
They will be accompanied by well-established pianists Anne Glass and Elizabeth Wolynec. Performing also will be the APSU Wind Ensemble, conducted by Gregory Wolynec, and the University Choir and Chamber Singers, conducted by Karen Kenaston-French.
According to Robinson-Oturu, as a special treat, President Sherry Hoppe, piano, and Provost Bruce Speck, tenor, will share their musical talents to the eveningdesigned to raise money for music and President's Emerging Leaders Program scholarships.
Hoppe said, “With the return this fall of the 101st Airborne Division, it's appropriate that our concertin fact, our entire Homecominghas been built around a patriotic theme.
“These soldiers and their families are an important part of the Austin Peay family, so Dr. Speck and I are delighted to help honor them. Their safe return makes this a truly great homecoming.”
“Everyone will be talking about the concert for years to come,” Robinson-Oturu said. “It will be exciting, fun, and it is for a great causethe students and the future.”
The admission of $50 per person is tax-deductible. All concert proceeds will benefit the APSU scholarship fund.
