Two Austin Peay State University faculty were recognized by Ducks Unlimited for developing the first Wetlands Education statewide program.
Dr. Andrew Barrass, project manager, and Michelle Rogers, environmental science project manager, both with APSU's Center of Excellence for Field Biology, were honored during the Ducks Unlimited Recognition Awards Ceremony, Sept. 20 at Morgan University Center.
Barrass and Rogers began Project Webfoot, a nonprofit wetlands education program for educators and students in grades 4-6 and Tennessee's first Wetlands Education effort, with Ducks Unlimited and the national office of Project WET. Their project promotes the long-term protection of the wetlands and watersheds.
鈥淭hanks to their efforts, Tennessee led the nation in Project Webfoot enrollments during the program's pilot year, with 55 classrooms and more than 2,200 students participating in this unique wetland education experience,鈥 said Gregg Patterson, communication director for Ducks Unlimited.
The Center of Excellence for Field Biology secured funding for Project Webfoot through the Tennessee Department of Agriculture's Nonpoint Source Program and shared the costs with Ducks Unlimited to start the program in Tennessee.
The state's Nonpoint Source Program also shares the national award with Barrass and Rogers.
