10 APSU first-year students named essay winners
Ten Austin Peay State University first-year students were recognized for having best student essays on themes from the book An Ordinary Man, an autobiography by Paul Rusesabagina (pronounced roo-se-sa-ba-ge-na) and the basis for the Oscar-nominated movie, Hotel Rwanda.The students were lauded for their winning entries during a dinner held Oct. 1 at APSU that featured Rusesabagina, who later that evening delivered a public talk to more than 1,000 people in the APSU Dunn Center.

The student winners were Mary Barczak, Bailey Bomar, Teresa Cunningham, Callie Hollander, Micah James, Sabrina Jones, LaShay Lovelace, Ashley Miller, Bola Oyebade and Randy Tapp. All are either freshmen or transfer students during the 2009-10 academic year.
The essay contest was part of a new reading initiative at APSU called The Peay Read, designed to provide a unifying experience and contribute to the academic experiences for first-year students.
